Position Details

📌 Job Title: Legal Officer
📍 Location: Office of the President, Arusha, Tanzania
📅 Duration: Temporary (Until 31 December 2025)
🎓 Education: Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Law, specializing in international, criminal, humanitarian, or administrative law. A Bachelor’s degree with two additional years of experience may be considered.

About the Role

As a Legal Officer, you will work under the guidance of the President, reporting directly to the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor. Your expertise will be essential in providing legal, policy, and judicial support, drafting legal documents, conducting research, and assisting in international criminal law matters.

Key Responsibilities

✔️ Legal Research & Advisory – Conduct in-depth legal research on international humanitarian and criminal law while monitoring developments in relevant regions of the Mechanism’s work.
✔️ Judicial & Policy Support – Assist in the drafting and review of orders, decisions, policies, memoranda, and official documents for the President’s Office.
✔️ Sentence Enforcement & Detention Supervision – Support the President in overseeing the enforcement of sentences and detention conditions, ensuring compliance with international standards.
✔️ External Relations & Communication – Provide legal guidance on matters related to press, external relations, and public engagement.
✔️ Institutional Representation – Represent the President’s Office in institutional meetings, boards, and committees.
✔️ Inter-Departmental Coordination – Collaborate with other sections within the Mechanism to ensure smooth legal operations across both branches.

Who We’re Looking For

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of professional legal experience at the national or international level, preferably in criminal law, international law, humanitarian law, or administrative law.
UN Experience: Prior work with UN International Criminal Tribunals is desirable.
Detention & Sentence Enforcement: Experience in detention monitoring or sentence enforcement is a plus.
Language Proficiency: Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken) is required.
